Sudan Theme

The Situation: The Sudanese government has been waging war on its own people, especially in the region of Darfur, for years. Up to 400,000 people have been killed, and millions displaced. China is a leading economic partner of Sudan, using them as both a source for oil and a market for weapons. Many anti-genocide activists believe that if there is to be an end to what President Bush has officially declared to be 'genocide' in Darfur, it will happen when China puts significant economic and political pressure to bear on Sudan.

What We're Doing: So far, DHRC is hoping to organize a group of Duke students to attend an Olympic Run for Darfur in New Bern County, NC. The event is meant to juxtapose the 2008 Olympics marathon with a marathon for human rights here in the U.S. The marathon occurs March 26th; if interested, contact jrt6@duke.edu.

As well, DHRC plans to begin talks with the administration about a Banaa scholarship, which would bring a Sudanese refugee here to study at Duke University.

What YOU Can Do (Right Now!): The following links all have campaigns which you can help with. Most take no more than, literally, a few minutes.

http://www.standnow.org/ (STAND): DHRC is proud to be a registered STAND chapter. STAND is a student group working to end genocide. Their new campaign focuses on the President, and encourages him to lobby China. It only takes a few moments to endorse the campaign on their website.

http://www.1800genocide.com/ (1-800 Genocide): This website shows you how to call your elected representatives for free, and tell them to do what they can to help end the genocide. The hotline gives you the talking points; all you have to do is call!

http://www.genocideintervention.net/ (Genocide Intervention Network): This site also lets you endorse the new "Executive Legacy" Campaign, which STAND created. As well, you can educate yourself as to the many different genocides throughout the globe.

http://darfurscores.org/reportcards (Darfur Scores): This website will tell you exactly how your Senators and Representatives have voted on the Darfur genocide. Don't like how your congressman/woman has done? Fill them in!
